Meet the 2004 Summer Immersion Program Interns

Sara
Gausz
Sara recently graduated from the University of Scranton, where
she studied Spanish and Human Services. During her time here
in El Salvador, she will be working with the Association for
Inter-communal Health and Social Services (APSIES) in the
community of Los Espinos, Usulutan. She will participate in
their environmental programs, as well as in projects with
the women and young people of the community – learning
how to make bread among other things! She will be living with
Don Alcides, a community leader, his two adult daughters,
and two grandchildren.

Renee Hicks
Renee comes to us from Kentucky, where she is currently studying
French and Spanish at Berea College. During her time here
in El Salvador, she will be working with the Association for
Inter-communal Health and Social Services (APSIES) in the
community of Los Espinos, Usulutan. She will participate in
their environmental programs – learning how a worm-farm
works, growing seedlings in a green house, and participating
in the youth organization of the community. She will be living
with Don Carlos Arturo and Doña Simona and their six
children.

Gabriella Kusz
Gabby recently graduated with a MBA from the University
of Dayton. During her time in El Salvador, she will be living
in the small mountain town of Berlin, Usulutan. She will be
collaborating with a small recycling business, MIBERLIM, run
completely by women, most of whom are single mothers. She
will be sharing her accounting skills with them, as they work
to formalize their efforts. She will be living with Niña
Juana and her teenage son, filling in for Juana’s daughter
who is studying in the States.

Sue Lake
Sue is currently a law student at the University of Santa
Clara in California. While in El Salvador, she will be living
in the Ciudadela Guillermo Ungo near Suchitoto in Cuscatlan.
She will be working in the community’s school, a large
educational complex where over 450 children study. She will
be teaching English, reading stories, and getting to know
the children in the first through sixth grades. She will be
living with Gudelia, her three adult children, and her two
grandchildren.

Nicole Lang
Nikki recently graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati,
Ohio, with a degree in Social Work. She will be dedicating
15 months of her life to serve as a CRISPAZ long-term volunteer.
She will be living with her husband Thomas, in the small town
of San Jorge, in the department of San Miguel. While there,
she will be working with an organization called OIKOS Solidarity,
specifically supporting their programs to develop alternative
economic opportunities for women through initiatives of a
bakery and a crafts-workshop. In her free time, she will be
teaching English classes in the nearby community school.

Thom Lang
Thom graduated from Xavier University with a biology degree,
and will be going on to study medicine after serving as a
long-term volunteer with CRISPAZ for fifteen months. While
here, he will be living with his wife, Nicole, in the town
of San Jorge, San Miguel. He too will be working with OIKOS
Solidarity in their environmental projects, specifically supporting
a model farm in Jucuaran, Usulutan. Thom and Nicole will be
living with Niña Blanca, an active community leader,
and the pastor of the local Lutheran church.

Debra Parker
Debbie has just graduated from the University of North Carolina
with her masters in social work. While in El Salvador, she
will be living in the Ciudadela Guillermo Ungo near Suchitoto
in Cuscatlan. She will be working with the Women’s Association
for Communal Development (AMUDESCO), specifically supporting
the work of the Popular Defenders committee, a group of women
who work on issues of domestic violence. She will be living
with Marilu and her three young daughters.

Alice Pennington
Alice is a Spanish and International Peace Studies major at
Notre Dame University. While in El Salvador, she will be living
in the Ciudadela Guillermo Ungo near Suchitoto in Cuscatlan.
She will be working in the community’s school, a large
educational complex where over 450 children study. Her task
will be to teach English and Computer skills to the high-school
students. She will be living with Ana Ruth, her grandmother,
and her daughter.

Michelle Powell
Michelle comes to us from Saint Mary’s University in
Illinois, where she is studying Social Work and Spanish. Here
in El Salvador, she will be working with a Catholic Association
called The Voice of the People, which draws its inspiration
from the witness of Monsignor Romero’s life and death.
She will be living in a community called El Condadillo, Usulutan,
participating in the pastoral life of the community –
teaching catechism classes, participating in a recently-formed
choir, as well as teaching English classes in the nearby community
of Pasaquina. She will be living with Lastenia, whose son
passed away recently, leaving her alone.
