FMLN Candidate Wins Presidency in El Salvador CRISPAZ El Salvador Coordinator Shares a Morning-After Reflection Antonio Cañas, CRISPAZ country coordinator, wrote this to executive director Dennis O'Connor on Monday, March 16, the day after El Salvador's national election in which the FMLN candidate, Mauricio Funes, was elected president. "I have been thinking of all of you until late last night, trying to understand the meaning of all the support so many Americans of good heart have given to the people of El Salvador." Here is a link to the New York Times report on the election. Here is the reflection Antonio wanted shared with the CRISPAZ board--and all CRISPAZ supporters:
It is a March morning, as so many in years long gone. It seem a so-common day that it is hard to think of all those generations that passed, with sacrifice and suffering, waiting for this light. Huge responsibilities, huge problems await for this government, and this people, for every one of us Salvadorans, and every one of all of you who have always been close accompanying the suffering, faith and hopes of this people. This is also your day. Thank you. Funes first speech, as elected president, last night, had the right words remembering Monseñor Romero, promising to follow the church preferential option for the poor. Just another common morning. The task of building the Kingdom of God calls today for us just as every day. Peace, |
