ARENA Wins 34 Seats in the Legislative Assembly, FMLN Wins 32
Unofficial results in the legislative races report ARENA finishing on top with 34 legislative representatives over the FMLN’s 32 seats. The PCN, PDC, and CD won 11, 5 and 2 seats respectively.

FMLN Candidate Violeta Menjivar Narrowly Wins San Salvador Mayoral Race
Early Thursday morning, El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) declared FMLN candidate Violeta Menjivar the winner in the closely contested San Salvador mayoral race. After a manual recount of contested votes, Menjivar edged out opposing ARENA party candidate Rodrigo Samayoa by a mere 44 votes, the narrowest margin for San Salvador in history. Menjivar is the first woman mayor of San Salvador.
After the polls closed on Sunday, both candidates claimed victory, and in what may prove to be a politically costly—if not embarrassing—display of zeal, Salvadoran President Tony Saca declared his party’s candidate the winner, holding up Samayoa’s hand on live television, despite no official declaration from the TSE.
In the following days, both parties alleged fraud, the TSE repeatedly postponed the announcement of a winner, FMLN supporters held rallies “celebrating” Menjivar’s victory and demanding that the TSE officially declare her the winner, the FMLN representative at the TSE withdrew in protest as the recount drew on, and seven people were wounded when anti-riot police and FMLN supporters violently clashed outside the Radisson Hotel where TSE officials were conducting the recount.
The capitol city’s mayoral race was one of 262 Salvadoran mayoral elections decided Sunday. Final results are not yet in for a number of mayoral races.
