Monday, July 25, 2005 Action Alert: Last chance to have your voice heard on CAFTA The U.S. House of Representatives reportedly will vote on the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) this Wednesday, July 27, or Thursday, July 28. Despite the Bush Administration’s aggressive campaign to persuade CAFTA opponents to change their mind and vote in favor of the legislation, the vote is still expected to be close. CAFTA has already been approved by the Senate. Critics of CAFTA cite weak environmental and labor provisions, an undemocratic ratification process in Central American member countries, the potential loss of American jobs and the failed example of NAFTA as reasons for opposing the legislation. Civil society organizations in the United States and Central America believe the agreement is beyond repair and that the free trade, neoliberal economic model favors multinational corporations at the expense of the health and well-being of citizens. It is not too late to call or write your representatives and voice your opposition to CAFTA. Click here to contact your representative.
